HAIR LOSS PROGRAMME

Hair loss is a common condition affecting men and women of all ages. In men, the most common cause is androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss), which is due to the increased male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), leading to the classical M-shaped male pattern hair loss. The hair growth cycle is affected in androgenetic alopecia. Hair in the telogen (dormant) phase is more predominant than hair in the anagen (growth) phase. This leads to a decrease in hair on certain areas of the head. In women, the cause is multi-factorial, and hair loss is usually more prominent along the parting of the hair and the crown area. There are various grading systems used to determine the severity, such as the Norwood-Hamilton scale for men, and the Ludwig scale for women.

There are numerous other causes of hair loss as well, such as scalp infections, psoriasis, autoimmune disease, telogen effluvium, nutritional deficiencies etc., which highlights the importance of getting a proper medical evaluation to ascertain the correct diagnosis. The prescribed treatment will depend largely on the diagnosis made.

Treatment Options

The most common and well-studied treatments available in the market include topical, and oral prescribed medications as well as low level light therapy and injectable based treatments.

Topical minoxidil 5% spray/foam is used once or twice (preferred) daily to stimulate hair growth. It thickens hair strands and prolongs the growth phase (anagen phase) of the hair.

For men, oral finasteride is a US FDA approved treatment in men to block the production of dihydrotestosterone, the main hormone related to male pattern hair loss. Studies in women related to oral finasteride are however not conclusive.

Oral supplementation with minerals and vitamins is also popular, with more well-known brands including Viviscal and Nutrafol.

Other popular treatments include low level light therapy (LLLT), Regenera Activa, and growth factor injections. Lower level light therapy uses diode lasers in the form of a comb or helmet-based to stimulate production of growth factors that nourish the hair. Regenera Activa uses skin micrografts harvested from your own scalp to deliver progenitor (stem) cells and growth factors used in the regenerative process of renewing and growing new hair.

ASTUTE PROGRAMME

The Astute Program is aimed at men and women who have been diagnosed with male or female pattern hair loss. As hair loss tends to be caused by a host of contributory factors, it is best treated with a multi-modal approach which achieves synergistic mechanisms of action and results. Also, because hair takes time to grow, improvement is usually only visible after consistent and compliant treatment for at least 3-6 months. Such treatments are meant to be indefinite, with treatment lasting for as long as results are desired. It is likely that hair loss will begin again after treatment is discontinued. It is ideal to begin these treatment options together in the same time period in order to have synergistic results.

STEP 1 - CONSULTATION AND ASSESSMENT

We first start with a thorough history taking, clinical examination with scalp scan, and a panel of blood tests. The blood tests are used to screen for nutritional deficiencies such as iron, copper, and zinc, and potential autoimmune and thyroid disorders that may cause hair loss.

STEP 2 - REGENERA ACTIVA

Upon diagnosis of male or female pattern hair loss, the Astute Program uses a combination of topical, oral, and injectable based procedures to halt and reverse the hair loss process.

We begin with Regenera Activa to kick start the reversal of hair loss. This procedure only needs to be done once a year.

STEP 3 - ANTEAGE GROWTH FACTOR

Following Regenera Activa, Anteage growth factor-based activity is performed monthly for a series of 5 sessions in the initial treatment phase. This will further boost hair growth. Further maintenance phase treatment intervals are determined on a case by a case basis upon consultation with your physician.

HOME CARE

Apart from procedures, an effective hair loss treatment has to include medications in the form of minoxidil and/or finasteride. Regular use of low level light therapy is also helpful.

Minoxidil

At Astute, we use minoxidil 5% foam combined with tretinoin 0.01%. Tretinoin is known to increase the absorption of minoxidil, and therefore enhance the response of androgenetic alopecia to minoxidil. Minoxidil can also be taken orally. Oral minoxidil is more effective, but because it is originally used as a treatment for high blood pressure, it might cause a decrease in blood pressure in some people. Additionally, it can cause an increase in hair growth on the face and body.
